In March, Mrs. Brough took a group of 27 students to the Utah ASL State Competition, where several students placed in their events. Please congratulate them if you see them!
ASL Literature/Storytelling:
This event features literature pieces where students creatively use ASL parameters—such as role shifting, eye gaze, depicting verbs, classifier handshapes, facial expressions, facial grammar, and ASL syntax and semantics.
Winners:
Neil Payne – 1st Place, ASL 1 ABC Storytelling
Sadie Wardle – 1st Place, ASL 2 ABC Storytelling
Mars Cannon – 1st Place, ASL 1 Handshape Storytelling
Hazel Wheeler – 2nd Place, ASL 1 Handshape Storytelling
Aubrey Koralewski – 2nd Place, ASL 3/4 Handshape Storytelling
Makenah Anderson – 2nd Place, ASL 3/4 ASL Receptive Storytelling
Sandra Workman – 3rd Place, ASL Cinema (all levels 1–4). Neil Payne and Elizabeth Wright also appeared in her film.
Event Descriptions:
ABC Stories: Students use the ASL alphabet (A-Z) in sequence to tell a story, incorporating each handshape while developing a plot with a clear resolution.
Handshape Stories: Students tell a story using only one handshape, relying on changes in location, palm orientation, movement, and classifiers to create meaning and differentiate characters and actions.
ASL Receptive Storytelling: Students watch stories told in ASL and are tested on their understanding of the language.
ASL Cinema: Students create ASL films that emphasize visual culture, body language, facial grammar, and ASL fluency, using captions and clear visuals of signing.
Congratulations to all our talented students!
