Mock Disaster at Springville High

A vast mock disaster was conducted this afternoon, April 10, at Springville High coordinated by many local law enforcement agencies, fire and rescue, and SHS administration.

Students were able to view a mock DUI head-on collision with two fatalities and three severe injury casualties.  Springville High students participated as actors in the mock disaster.  A University of Utah Air-Med helicopter arrived on the scene to take the most injured patient to care.

Over fifty professional rescue personnel assisted with the mock disaster in an effort to impress upon students the grave responsibility one takes when driving including the accountability to drive without distraction and without the influence of illegal substances.  The hope is to have students realize that their actions and decisions when driving not only impacts themselves but their families and friends.

The mock disaster concluded in the auditorium with an emotional mock funeral for the two deceased victims in the crash.  Finally, teachers followed-up with a “debrief” and discussion with their students during fourth hour about what they witnessed today and asked some of the following questions:  What are your thoughts about what you saw today in the assembly? Why do you think this happens?  What can you do to help prevent this type of accident from happening? How are you feeling after attending the assembly?

Mrs. White’s school news class discussed that they were impressed that so many emergency service personnel gave and will continue to give 110% of their efforts to save individuals who are total strangers to them regardless of who is at fault in an accident.  Students also discussed that although emergency services would prefer to have little or no emergencies, they are so well-prepared and trained that they can immediately jump into any emergency situation even at the risk of their own life to save another.

Fox 13 News was on the scene reporting on the mock disaster.

Many thanks to the following agencies for their massive effort and professional manner in which they demonstrated to the students how law enforcement, fire, rescue, teachers, staff, and administrators care to give students information and experiences that will help keep them safe.

Participating Agencies:
Utah County Sherriff’s Department and Dispatch
Utah Highway Patrol
Springville City Police and Fire Department
Springville City Ambulance and EMS Services
University of Utah Air-Med
