This past weekend the Springville High swim team had their region meet in Provo. Springville head coach Amyee Hargett felt confident about both the girls and boys team.
"We have been training for five months now, and every swimmer is ready. They are excited and ready to swim at their best," said Hargett.
On Friday the boys took first in the 200 Medley Relay. Connor Anderson took a first place win in the 200 yard free, becoming region champ. Payton Acor and Kyle Gashler were the region champions in the 200 I.M. with Gabe Hargett coming in second, and Nicole Mertz was the region champ in the girls 50 yard free. Boys finished the day with a large first place lead, and the girls were in a close second behind Orem.
Saturday was a strong day for both the girls and boys teams. Lauren Pilcher and Connor Anderson were both the region champs for the 100 freestyle. For the 500 yard freestyle, the region champs were both Springville freshman Nicole Mertz and Christopher McClain. For the 200 free relay, the girls took third place while the boys took first place. John Morris took the title in the 100 backstroke. In the 100 yard breaststroke, John Morris took first while Matt Vaughan came in a close second. Both 400 free relays were in a close battle with Orem.
The girls team came out on top while the boys finished first. Overall, the boys team came away with the region championship with the girls in second place only eleven points behind Orem.
State will be February 3 and 4. Team captains Kenzee Hargett, Melissa McQueen, Nathan Graham, and Dustin Brinton could not have been more proud if the success of the team this past year.
McQueen said, "It has been a great four years, and I really am going to miss it."
