SHS seniors receive over $1.7 million in scholarship monies

Brittanye MesserlySpringville High’s Brittanye Messerly is currently interning at Cedar Fort Publishing. Her duties include reading manuscripts and deciding if it should be published or not. She says that she is still interested in this line of work.
“Publishing is a very fast paced, communicational heavy and hardworking business. There are a lot of rules to follow and decisions to make,” said Messerly.
Messerly said that she would recommend the internship program to other students.
“It’s really interesting to see a job you might want to do in action; you get a taste of the real occupational world,” said Messerly.
Overall, she says that if you love reading, editing, and improving other’s writing that you should definitively shoot for this line of work.

New Intersection to affect Graduation

The intersection at the UVU entrance has been re-designed, and will open just in time to affect the commute of those attending our high school graduations and practices held there. This new intersection type is the first of its kind in Utah County. UDOT has provided some helpful preview information in the Continuous Flow Intersection document provided by UDOT. There is also a video and other details found on their website.
We encourage anyone that will be attending graduation at UVU, to review the provided information so that you can "See it before you drive it."
SHS student interns at Royal Engineering

Dustin BrintonDustin Brinton is a senior at Springville High school and is currently interning at Royal Engineering. While interning, Brinton has to draft and help design projects, complete additional work so that projects get out the door and meet deadlines. After interning for a semester, he’s still interested in engineering.
“I get to go to lunch with my mom every day,” Brinton tells of a cool experience.
Brinton is interested in this because it gives him an opportunity to work with his hands and see what he is accomplishing.
“I get to design the project then go and build it,” said Brinton.
Brinton recommends this area of work to other students. It has been beneficial to him because he has learned a lot about drafting and auto CAD (computer aided drafting).

Hannah Nelson, Microbiology Wiz

HannahHannah Nelson is a senior at Springville High school working an internship at Brigham Young University. Hannah wants to major in microbiology and is in charge of her own research. Nelson plans out her own projects herself; she is also in charge of carrying them out and getting her supplies. Nelson has a lot to do, and she enjoys her work.
“I want to work on bacterial diseases; I want to be able to help humanity by developing vaccines and curing diseases,” said Nelson.
Once, while Nelson was at work, the power went out so they had to plug the freezers into the emergency lights to prevent the bacteria from growing.
Nelson said, “It really puts me ahead in my field of study. I would recommend that other students try their career out before college.”
After high school graduation, Nelson wants to attend Brigham Young University and major in microbiology.

SHS Senior is a Nursing Intern

McKenzie GrahamMcKenzie Graham is only a senior, but she’s working on her career and getting a head start. She works and internship at Art City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
“It’s so interesting,” said, Graham, “You get to learn a lot and you get to help people every day.”
Graham’s primary focus at work includes CNA duties and she assists the nurses in their various tasks. Her work is never routine and she learns new skills every day. She observes the nurses working and they help explain what she needs to do as a future nurse. When she finishes her internship and majors in nursing after graduation, she’ll be one amazing nurse.
After graduation, Graham would like to attend Dixie State College and major in nursing.

SHS student ready to face the future

Natalie ShawNatalie Shaw is a junior at Springville High school. She has great ambitions for the future and is already working on her career. She is working an internship in psychology at Springville Jr. High.
When asked why she was interested in this line of work, she replied, “I want to be able to help people and kids that go through trauma. I want kids to believe there is always someone there for them.”
During her internship, she travels to the Jr. High and helps teachers teach their students and helps the students with their projects. Shaw enjoys her work even though it’s very stressful. She loves getting to know the students and learning more about them.
In the future, Shaw plans on attending Southern Utah University and majoring in Psychology.

Tooth Trainee
Thu, 05/17/2012 - 18:49 | by carey.whiteSenior Ana Chavez has taken a bold interest in becoming a dental hygienist by studying this field through an internship available at Springville High. She interns at Art City Dental training with professionals and helping with dental tools during procedures. In addition, she helps keep the rooms sanitary. She loves this internship because it gives her the opportunity to actually work and learn at the same time.
“I believe that this internship is what I was looking for,” said Chavez.
The awesome dental assistants in the office friended Chavez and helped teach her how to be unique at work. Chavez knows how much this will help her with her future ambitions, now she’s aware of the procedures in a dental office. Chavez plans to attend the University of Utah and further her knowledge to become a dental hygienist.
Chavez definitely suggests taking an internship yourself, “It helped me a lot because I needed hands on work. I will definitely recommend it, students need to know about this because it would help them a lot,” said Chavez.

Senior Interns at Springville Jr. High

Sarah TomcoSarah Tomco is currently interning at Springville Jr. High as a teacher’s aide. She contributes to her classes by helping students with their assignments, running errands for the teachers, and adding to the class discussions. Sometimes, she gets to plan and teach the entire lesson.
Tomco shared some of the reasons why she loves this internship, “I have always loved literature and I have always loved teaching. I love helping students understand something they struggle with,” said Tomco.
She expressed her interest in this line of work by revealing her passion for English, even though over time it may fade. Her opinion on teaching is very strong, “My passion for teaching will never fade. Sharing my knowledge and teaching students to question everything and seek for truth will never lose its value,” said Tomco.
This internship has provided her with fun, hands on experiences in the classroom. She was able to prepare and present a lesson based around “the balcony scene” in Romeo and Juliet.
Tomco said, “I had so much fun planning the lesson and talking to the kids. I think they sensed my enthusiasm and confidence which, in turn, increased their enthusiasm.”
Tomco wishes to further her education and study English at Brigham Young University.
The internship proved to be very beneficial to Tomco, she said, “I would definitely recommend it. I have gained confidence in my abilities and learned how to work and be an employee in a low-stakes setting. It’s a fantastic opportunity.”
