Susan Langford was chosen as this year’s Springville High recipient of Horace-Mann’s Crystal Apple award. This honor is awarded to one outstanding Springville High teacher each year.
Langford has been teaching Math at Springville High for the past seven years.
“I love SHS because of the tremendous spirit among the student body,” said Langford.
Langford’s favorite quote is, "There is more in us than we know. Perhaps if we can be made to see it, for the rest of our lives we will be unwilling to settle for less,” by Kurt Hahn.
“I love it when my students have been struggling with a concept for awhile and the light bulb in their head finally flips on and they get it,” said Langford.
When she’s not at school, Langford enjoys gardening, sewing, quilting, and hanging out with her children and grandchildren.
In this year’s Knowledge Bowl 26 teams competed all week in head to head intense competition. The final round was held on Friday, March 23, with two teams remaining. Ironically one team consisted entirely of girls including Ashley Eaton, Brooklyn Hanks, Caroline Lewis, and Rhetta Shoemaker and the other team of boys.
Jordan Gage, Kyle Gashler, Ethan Trunnell, and Forrest Markham won the championship round with a score of 195-90.
"One of the best things about Knowledge Bowl is that it’s open for everyone to participate. It’s fun, but it also emphasizes what SHS does best; educate our students," said Mrs. Priscilla Leek, Knowledge Bowl moderator.

Mary Wells, a senior at Springville High School, won Region Dance Sterling Scholar and was awarded runner-up at the State Sterling Scholar competition. After winning region, Wells received full tuition scholarships to most Utah colleges and universities. As state runner-up, she was awarded a $700 cash scholarship to a college of her choosing. Wells says she was surprised when she received runner-up at State, but also proud, pleased, and thankful.
“I really wasn’t expecting it,” Wells said.
Mary Wells plans on majoring in Dance Education next year at a college that she hasn’t decided on.
On the sunny afternoon of Tuesday, March 20, a soccer match up between the Mountain View Bruins and the Springville Red Devils ended in an intense double overtime 3-3 draw.
The game started in close contention on Springville’s home field. Springville striked first when Ryan Murray scored the first goal for the Red Devils and took the 1-0 lead against a very good Bruin team. Springville was still on a roll when midfielder McKay Murphy scored for the Red Devils.
The Bruins were in disbelief when Springville was up 2-0; and, that wasn’t what they wanted, so Chris Reyes decided to step up to the field and strike first for the Bruins and eventually came back to tie the game 3-3 in double overtime. The game was played at Springville.

On Tuesday March 21, at Springville High, the Payson Lions and the Springville Red Devils took the field to face off against each other in an anticipated match up; however, the Lions showed their prowess by shutting out the Red Devils 13-0.
The first inning was all you had to watch if you wanted to sum up the game. Payson’s Kolton Brost hit a double and Tallin Proctor hit a triple and everything went downhill for the Red Devils from there. The Red Devils couldn’t seem to slow down the Lions as they took an 11-0 lead.
The game ended in a 13-0 win when Payson tacked on two more points in the 3rd and 5th innings, that’s when the ump decided to call off the game and gave the win to the Lions.
Springville heads down to Snow Canyon high school to play in the Little Caesar’s classic this weekend.
Nationwide Grant Provides Funding for Food Production, Service-Learning
INDIANAPOLIS – The Springville FFA chapter in Springville, Utah has been awarded $2,000.00 as part of the inaugural FFA: Food For All program. The nationwide program provides grant money to local FFA chapters to support year-long service-learning projects focused on developing and implementing sustainable hunger relief projects.
The Springville FFA plans to help fight hunger by providing fresh produce for the local community at no charge and the surplus will then be given to the Food Bank of Provo. The vegetable plants will be grown in the high school greenhouse, and planted in the nearly 12,000 square foot garden plot at the Nebo Learning Center. The garden will be run by FFA members all summer long as part of their Supervised Agriculture Experience. During the harvest season community members will be able to visit our road side stand to collect any produce they would like. This is an amazing opportunity to teach not only the students but also the community on the importance of sustainable agriculture and good nutrition. According to the https://www.utahfoodbank.org/utah-hunger-facts, Utah is ranked fourth in the nation for the highest rate of very low food security in the nation. About 400,000 Utahns risk missing one meal every day and 1 in 7 Utah children is at risk of hunger. Springville FFA not only wants to fight hunger but also educate their community on the hunger battle and the role agriculture can play in fighting this battle. Local sponsors include Harward Farms and SunRoc.
The FFA: Food For All grant program is administered by the National FFA Organization, with funding provided by Farmers Feeding the World and the Howard G. Buffett Foundation. The program provided $330,000 to FFA chapters in 41 states. More information about the program can be found at www.FFA.org/foodforall.
About the Howard G. Buffett Foundation
Established in 1999, the Howard G. Buffett Foundation’s primary mission is to combat hunger and improve the standard of living for vulnerable populations throughout the world. The Foundation invests in a full spectrum of initiatives to address global hunger and food insecurity including: direct humanitarian aid for populations in crisis; agricultural development for smallholder farmers, particularly women; livelihood improvement for smallholders through commercial market access; academic and field research to increase farmer productivity in resource-constrained contexts; and advocacy campaigns to sustain and scale best practices. Learn more at www.thehowardgbuffettfoundation.org.
About Farmers Feeding the World
Farmers Feeding the World is an ambitious initiative of the Farm Journal Foundation that looks to rally the agriculture industry around three critical needs: providing hunger relief, creating agricultural development through sustainable solutions and communicating the importance of modern agriculture in the fight against hunger. The Farmers Feeding the World initiative unites farmers, agribusiness and organizations to make a meaningful difference in those three areas. For more information, visit www.FarmersFeedingTheWorld.org.
About The National FFA Organization
The National FFA Organization, formerly known as the Future Farmers of America, is a national youth organization of 540,739 student members – all preparing for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture – as part of 7,489 local FFA chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The National FFA Organization changed to its present name in 1988, in recognition of the growth and diversity of agriculture and agricultural education. The FFA mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. The National FFA Organization operates under a federal charter granted by the 81st Congress of the United States, and it is an integral part of public instruction in agriculture. The U.S. Department of Education provides leadership and helps set direction for FFA as a service to state and local agricultural education programs. For more, visit the National FFA Organization online (www.ffa.org), on Facebook (www.facebook.com/nationalffa), on Twitter (http://twitter.com/nationalffa) and FFA Nation (http://ffanation.ffa.org).

Andalyn Hall placed 1st in the Agri-Science Animal Systems category and will soon compete for a trip to the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis this coming October. Andalyn is also representing Springville High’s FFA and Springville Jr. High at the Central Utah Science and Engineering Fair at Brigham Young University next week.
Caitlin Dinkel competed in the creed contest and did quite well. Darryl Barnes was named 2nd runner up as the Star State Greenhand in Production Agriculture for his project of raising and selling market steers.
Jason Averett, Lauren Ridge, and Dadoka Mower received their State FFA Degree recognition for three years of membership and a commitment to an agricultural project.
Past students Logan Jones and Miles Beach were recognized for receiving their American FFA Degree and will again be recognized at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis in October of 2012.
Springville FFA recently received a $2,000 Food for All grant to assist with our community garden that is located at the Nebo Learning Center. All the plants for this garden are being grown in our Springville High greenhouse and will be managed all summer by FFA members. All produce raised will be free to the public and any surplus donated to the Utah Food Bank. Christina Nolasco has been an integral part of this success.
