SHS Swim Team Wins Region Title

Many records have been made at SHS, many have been broken. Some records at SHS have been around for a long time, some not. The Mighty Red Devil Swim teams competed, and swept the board, at the Region swim meet last Friday and Saturday, January 22 and 23.The girls were led by team captains, Shannon Vaughan, Karlie Taylor, and Rachelle Pope. The girls started the meet by placing second in the 200 yard Medley relay. Although the second place finish after Spanish Fork was not desired, the girls did not let the second place finish lose sight of their goal. Team captains, Vaughan, Taylor, and Pope rallied the girls together to watch senior Tricia Buzbee swim the 200 yard freestyle. Buzbee won the race by a considerable amount, and started the Springville domination. The next race was the 200 yard Individual Medley, in which freshman Rebekah McClain took second. The girls were ready for the last race of the day, the 50 yard freestyle. Aubrey Tingey and Rachelle Pope placed first and second in the race, respectively. With the final swim of the first day the girls were ranked ahead, with a big lead, almost ensuring their victory.
The second day of the meet came and with it the opportunity to continue dominating. The 100 yard freestyle was swam by Rachelle Pope, who took first, adding many points to the already growing score. In the 500 freestyle, senior Karlie Taylor swam the race and placed third overall. The girls then swam the 200 yard freestyle relay, in which they won. Nothing could stop the girls from winning the Region 8 title! The next event, the 100 yard Backstroke was swam by Rebekah McClain and Aubrey Tingey. McClain won the event, being the first freshman of the meet to place first, Tingey took a close second. The last individual race was swam by captain Shannon Vaughan. Vaughan persevered in the 100 breaststroke, winning first place. The last race of the meet was the 400 yard freestyle, which the girls easily took. Congratulations to the Mighty Red Devil Girls’ team for winning the region 8 title! Captain Shannon Vaughan said, “I am so proud of the girls! This has been a really hard year! The team has worked so hard for so long, and their efforts are finally beginning to show. I am excited for the State meet that is coming up, one of our goals is to place in the top five at state. This girls team is really competitive. Now let’s go out and dominate!”
The boys were led by team captains, Calvin Clark, Taylor Ottesen, and Jefferson McClain to their back-to-back-to-back Region title! In the 200 yard Medley relay the boys placed second after Spanish Fork, but like the girls team the boys knew what needed to be done in order to win the meet. Captain Jefferson McClain and senior Tyler Maingot swam the 200 yard freestyle, placing first and second respectively. The next race, the 200 yard Individual Medley, was swam by senior Calvin Clark. Clark swam against Jesse Roberts, two of the state’s most competitive swimmers in the 200 IM. After a hard fought battle, Clark surged ahead of Roberts and placed first. In the last race of the day, the 50 freestyle, junior Shane Williams had an outstanding first place swim. Williams’ race invigorated the team, causing them to enter the next day with confidence, excitement, and a will to win.
The second day started off with Clark swimming the 100 fly, which he placed first in. Williams then swam the 100 freestyle, and scored another first place and amazing swim. After Williams swam it was time for McClain to capture a back-to-back Region title in the 500 freestyle, which he did. Maingot also swam the 500 freestyle, and placed second. The next race was the 200 freestyle relay, swam by John Marret, Jefferson McClain, Calvin Clark, and Shane Williams. The relay took first place. The next two events, the 100 backstroke and breaststroke were swam by junior Ethan Wolz, who place second in both. The last event, the 400 freestyle relay, consisted of, Kolby Harget, Calvin Clark, Jefferson McClain, and Shane Williams. The relay surged to a victory over the competing teams, ensuring the SHS victory. Both the boys and girls team took first place in the Region 8 swim meet!
The SHS swim teams would like to invite you to the 4A State Championship meet on Friday and Saturday the 5th and 6th of February at Brigham Young University. The times for the meet are as follows: Friday 4:00 pm, Saturday 11:00 am. Come and support the Mighty Red Devil Swim teams! If the boys’ take state, causing a back-to-back-to-back championship, it will be the first time in SHS history ANY sports team has done so. Come and support your State Champion Swim team!
Red Devils Dash to a Victory in OT against Skyhawks

Sam Schriener assists the Red Devils in their Win over Salem Hills in OTWith the final score of 60 to 53, the Springville Red Devils took the victory over the Salem Hill Skyhawks. All through regulation time, the score was close. In the fourth quarter, fans on both sides were on the edge of their seats as the game went into overtime. Landon Simonson from Salem Hills scored 25 points, but that wasn’t enough to stop the Mighty Red Devils from taking the win. Geoff Prusak and McKay Murphy had a combination of 25 of the 60 points scored by Springville.
Red Devils Clip Eagles’ Wings

On January 12, 2010, the first boy's basketball game took place between the new rival schools, Springville High and Maple Mountain. MMHS had the home court advantage, although the Springville fans traveled well and helped motivate their team to a dominating victory, 77-42. The game got out of hand quickly for Maple Mountain, as the Red Devils scored 9 points in the first minute and shut out the Golden Eagles in the first quarter, taking an 18-0 lead. MMHS didn’t give up easily, and played hard the entire game, but the Red Devils were just too much for the Golden Eagles to handle. Raul Delgado dominated with 34 points, 18 of them coming off of three point field goals. Other strong contributors were Matt Sumsion with 10 points, including an “alley-oop” dunk, and Kevin Critchfield with 12 points. This victory brings the Red Devils overall record to 7-5 and their regional record to 1-0.
The next home game with be Friday, January 22, against the Salem Hills Skyhawks. Tipoff is at 7 pm.

Lady Red Devils Defeat Dons

Springville Starts off Rivalry with Domination
Fri, 01/22/2010 - 15:50 | by carey.whiteOn Tuesday, January 12, the Springville Lady Red Devils ran onto the Maple Mountain court with much determination and will to win in the first matchup between the two schools. The Lady Devils had excellent teamwork and came out on top with an ending score of 55-31. Springville walked away with a decisive victory. Currently the Springville Girls’ Varsity basketball team is undefeated with a record of 10-0. The Lady Red Devils held Maple Mountain to only 6 points during the first half and opened up with a 27 point lead to remain unbeaten on the season. Lexi Eaton led Springville with 15 points and teammate Sadie Clements added 11.
This year the new Maple Mountain High School opened with many former students from Springville now attending Maple Mountain. Last season the Lady Red Devils finished 2nd in the State Championship. This year, Springville is eager to earn the top spot in state. The next game will be this Friday, January 22, against the Salem Hills Skyhawks.

EMS Mock Disaster -- Life or Death
Fri, 01/22/2010 - 15:47 | by carey.whiteOn Thursday, January 7, the EMS class participated in a Mock Disaster, in which the skills they learned over the course of the semester were put to the test. The EMS course at SHS is a class of life or death. During the semester long class, students learned skills that they will need to know in an emergency situation. The training ranged from treating minor cuts to recognizing the signs and symptoms of a heart attack. Mrs. Lisa Walker, teacher and SHS athletic trainer, invited the drama students to act as injured victims.
“My role in this Mock Disaster was to be a first responder which means I had to go in and treat everyone I could. I treated four people with many different injuries,” Stephany Peńa, a student in Mrs. Walker’s class, said. “I had no clue what Mrs. Walker was going to do and what kind of disaster our class was going to have. I was really nervous when I went to class because I didn’t know what was going to happen or how I would react to the disaster,” said Peńa
Many students commented that it was intense to be coming to school and having to treat people then thinking that they could die on their watch.
Red Devils Win Big on the Road

On Tuesday, January 5, our Varsity Red Devil Boy's Basketball team traveled to the new Westlake High School in Saratoga Springs and took home a victory, 80-60! Congratulations Boy's Basketball!
