EXTRA‑CURRICULAR ACTIVITY GUIDE
STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES FOR EXTRA‑CURRICULAR
ACTIVITIES
The central part of schooling is the academic program
of studies for students. However,
supportive to the instructional program is a diversity
of school sponsored extra‑curricular activities that are an
extension of the academic program. The following are defined
as extra‑curricular activities: Athletics, Drill Team and
Cheerleading.
PHILOSOPHY OF PROGRAM
Extra‑curricular activities must be in conformity
with the general objectives of the
school and be in line with the general policies of Springville
High School and the Utah High School Activities Association.
The education curriculum is first in emphasis. The extra‑curricular
program will function as a part of the whole curriculum and will
constantly strive for the development of a well‑rounded individual,
capable of
taking his/her place in society.
The primary purpose of the activities program at Springville
High School is to pro‑
mote the physical, mental, social, emotional and moral
well‑being of the participants. The extra‑curricular
program at SHS will be a positive force in preparing youth for an
enriching and vital role in American life.
Through voluntary participation, the student gives time,
energy, and loyalty to the program. He/she accepts the rules,
regulations and responsibilities unique to this program. In
order to contribute to the welfare of the group, the student must
be willing to assume these obligations. Participation in extra‑curricular
activities demands that the individual make sacrifices not required
of others.
In Region Six, Springville High School participates in
competitive activities with the
following schools: Payson, Spanish Fork, Provo, Timpview,
Lone Peak, American Fork and Pleasant Grove.
RULES FOR PARTICIPATION
Before any student will be permitted to participate in
any extra‑curricular program
at SHS, the student will pledge to abide by these rules,
both on and off campus, during the season in which he or she is
involved.
1. Grade
Requirements
A. No student shall be eligible to represent SHS if he/she
fails more than
one class in the preceding term. An incomplete shall be regarded
as a
failing grade until it is made up.
B. To be eligible to represent SHS, a student must earn a
2.0 GPA (ÒCÓ
average) the preceding term (UHSAA recommendation). Some coaches or advisors may require a higher GPA, but may not require
a lower GPA. Drill team members must earn a 3.0 GPA each term.
C. Eligibility will be established upon receipt of grades
each term.
D. All incoming tenth grade students must meet grade requirements
established above during the fourth quarter of their freshman year
to participate during the first quarter of their sophomore year. Ninth grade students participating in high school athletics must
follow the above guidelines.
E. Release Time (Seminary) grades will be figured into the
GPA.
F. The review committee reserves the right to review academic
performance of Resource L.D students to determine academic
eligibility.
2. Alcohol,
Tobacco, and Drugs
The UHSAA supports the U.S. Supreme Court rulings regarding
education. First, to prepare to be good citizens and second,
to teach them to be self‑reliant and self‑sufficient.
Activities of the UHSAA contribute to both of these goals.
The use of alcohol, tobacco products or other drugs in almost any
instance deters the realization of these goals. Every effort
shall be made at the local, regions, and state levels of participation
to eradicate the promotion, use of, abuse of alcohol, drugs and
tobacco with regard to participation in high school sports activities. Limitations for participation of students in UHSAA regarding the
use of alcohol, tobacco products, and other drugs as defined in
the Utah Code are:
A. First offense: Suspension form two consecutive
games, meets, match‑es, competitions or performances at the
same level of play (and any intervening levels as well). Practice
may be continued following a personal assessment of the student
by a licensed substance abuse intervention or treatment program
and/or participation in a district approved intervention program.
B. Second offense: A six week suspension from games,
meets, matches, competitions or performances. Student participation
in an assessment by a licensed substance abuse intervention or treatment
program with prescribed follow‑up is required. Practice
may continue only after the assessment has been completed and positive
participation in the prescribed follow‑up is occurring.
C. Third offense: An eighteen week suspension from
games, meets, matches, competitions, performances, or practices.
Where applicable this suspension carries over into the following
year. Reinstatement of eligibility at the end of the eighteen
week suspension is predicated upon successful completion of formal
assessment, intervention, and treatment program. Local school
and school districts restrictions may not be less than those outlined
above. In all of the foregoing offenses, local school and/or
district requirements which deal with discipline, suspension, corrective
measures, parent/guardian involvement, rehabilitation, and so forth,
must be met.
3. Attendance
Eligibility Requirements:
In order to maintain activity eligibility students must
attend, on time, at least 80% of the time. The combined total
of absences and tardies must not exceed 20% or five per grading
period. Lost eligibility may be restored after proper makeup.
All makeup options will be approved by the local advisory committee
and the Nebo School District Secondary Director. Attendance
deficiencies are based on the previous term.
4. Citizenship
Eligibility Requirements
Activity eligibility requires that students have no unsatisfactory
citizenship grades in the current year. Students become accountable
for ÒUÓ grades on the day that report cards are issued. Eligibility
may be reinstated as soon as unsatisfactory citizenship grades have
been made up. Makeup is assigned by a building administrator
based upon a minimum of three hours of school service per ÒUÓ.
5. Theft,
vandalism, and malicious mischief will not be tolerated.
6. All
participants must travel to and from contests with the team, and
use transportation provided for this purpose. Only on personal
request by the parent/guardian to the coach prior to a contest will
this be waived to allow the student to travel with his/her parent/guardian.
7. When
traveling, all participants will respect the facilities and equipment
of other schools and will represent SHS in a responsible and honest
manner.
8. The
participant will be personally financially responsible for all equipment
checked out to him/her during the activity season.
9. The
participant must be in school the entire day in order to participate
in an activity that day. An exception may be made if the student
had an approved medical appointment or illness. It is the
responsibility of the student to notify the coach/advisor.
10. If a participant
is truant from school disciplinary action will be administered by
the coach/advisor or trainer.
11. It is the duty
of all participants to report any and all injuries immediately to
the coach/advisor.
12. In competition,
sportsmanship and fair play should be used. Cheating in any
way is not fair play. Participants are expected to be honest
in competition and classroom.
13. The coach/advisor
may have additional rules and/or regulations. If so, they
must be in written form and signed by the participant and parent/guardian
and be on file with the school athletic director.
14. It is the coaches/advisors
responsibility to read and explain this total document to his/her
team at the beginning of each season.
15. The participant
will abide by all rules of SHS and the Nebo School District.
16. The participant
will abide by all rules of the UHSAA.
REVIEW COMMITTEE GUIDELINES
1. When
the coach/advisor and athletic director have determined that a possible
violation of the rules has occurred, the athletic director will
notify violating participants and parents by letter of a Review
Committee hearing.
2. The
athletic director will set a mutual date, time and place for the
Review Committee to meet and review the case. The meeting
mus be held at the earliest possible date and not later than one
week after being reported to the athletic director.
3. The
Review Committee will consist of the coach/advisor involved, the
athletic director and a faculty member appointed by the athletic
director. A permanent faculty member may be selected to this
committee. If any of the above is a parent of the participant
involved, they will not take part.
4. The
Review Committee will determine the extent of the penalty for a
violation of the participation rules. The committee may issue
any penalty they deem necessary to help the participant and the
overall program, but are obligated to follow all rules and penalties
set forth by the UHSAA.
5. The
Athletic Director will notify by mail the participant and the parent/guardian
of the results of the Review Committees decision.
6. If
suspended for less than an entire season, the participant must attend
practice sessions, games or contests, and other relevant team or
group activities during his/her suspension if he/she wishes to remain
a member of the team or group.
7. A
confidential record of all decisions will be kept in the office
of the Athletic Director.
8. It is the
responsibility of the coach or advisor to take whatever action he/she
deems necessary in the interim between the alleged violation and
the meeting of the Review Committee.
Appeals Procedures
The decision of the Review Committee can be appealed
to the Nebo School
District Superintendent and to the Nebo School District
School Board. The Appeal process must start within (15) days
of the participants notice of an infraction of the participation
rules. At the School Board level, the student, the parent/guardian,
the coach or advisor involved, and the Athletic Director are to
be available at the School Board level hearing. The Secretary
of the Board will notify all present of the Boards decision on each
case.
Parent's of SHS athletes are expected to read and
indicate that they understand the above guidelines.
