Red Devil Basketball Announces “Game Plan”
by Chris Kitchen, Varsity Coach
Springville High is very excited for this year’s basketball season. We have a very good athletic team with two returning senior starters, Alex Mortensen and Dan Foster. Alex Mortensen will handle the point guard responsibilities for us this year and we are expecting great things from him. Alex will also be one of our main offensive weapons and should see double digit scoring figures each night. Alex is a versatile player who can and will play the shooting guard position as well. Along with his solid defense and outstanding free throw shooting, Alex is a complete player who will help lead our team toward a region championship. As a 4.0 student, Alex will hopefully be part of this year’s academic all state team.
Dan Foster is our returning center from last year. Dan did a great job for us as a junior and we are expecting much of the same this year. Because Dan is such an accomplished shooter, we have moved him to the 3 position. Having Dan play more perimeter ball this year will really help both him and our team flourish. Dan is a complete player who can go inside as well as shoot from behind the 3 point line. Dan should also be one of our top rebounders each night.
A new member of our team this year is Raul Delgato. Raul started varsity for ALA (American Leadership Academy) last season as a sophomore and we are excited to have him on our team this year. Raul is an exceptional athlete. He is strong, jumps well and has good court sense. He is a good shooter who can shoot from anywhere on the court. He is also a great penetrator and can dish to an open shooter. Combined with the strengths of Alex Mortensen, we think that we have one of the best guard lines in the state.
Thomas Eastman and Luke Frampton and Ian Peacock are three of our returning senior players. Thomas, Luke and Ian are tough hard-nosed defenders who will give us significant minutes this year. All three are players that can start on any given night and we are expecting big things from these senior leaders. They love team nights.
We have a loaded junior class this year. Sam Schreiner, Geoff Prusak, Kevin Critchfield, Brandon Boyer, and Jordan Sumsion are all tough players who we anticipate will contribute heavily to the varsity team this year. Sam Schreiner will play both the 4 and 5 positions for us and has the potential to be one of the top players in our region this year at his position. Sam has a great head for the game and should be one of our top rebounders and shot blockers.
Geoff Prusak and Kevin Critchfield are great players who can play either the 2 or 3 positions. Geoff is a complete player who is as athletic as anyone on the team and Kevin is a great shooter and defender. Kevin is currently rehabbing a fractured bone in his foot but will be ready to go once region play rolls around in January.
Brandon Boyer and Jordan Sumsion will also be a great help for us this year. Both guys are very athletic and can defend the best offensive players. Both Brandon and Jordan are tough, scrappy players and great teammates.
We have an outstanding sophomore this year in Matt Sumsion. Matt is our tallest player at 6'6" and should contribute considerably at the varsity level. Matt has worked extremely hard during the off season. He is a good post player, play's tough hard defense and is a very good outside shooter. Matt will be asked to step up as a sophomore and play a significant role at the 5 spot this year.
We have two newcomers this year--Jared Gordon and Thomas Day. Jared is a senior and we are excited to have him on the team. He is a hard worker and won’t surprise anyone if he earns varsity time. He is proving to be a good defender and willing to play his roll offensively. Thomas Day is a junior with extreme jumping ability. He is very coachable and willing to work and learn. Thomas can be a very good player in our program over the next two years.
Our team is ready for this year’s season and we are excited to begin play. Our first game is on Wednesday, November 26, 3:30 pm, at Utah Valley University. Our first opponents are Lone Peak and Pleasant Grove, two of the top 5A programs in the state. Please come join us this year and support your Red Devil Basketball team. |

The Springville High School Cheerleaders recently competed with other Utah cheer squads in a competition held in Southern Utah. They performed two outstanding routines receiving top honors. All the lessons of history in four sentences: Whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad with power. The mills of God grind slowly but they grind exceedingly small. The bee fertilizes the flower it robs. When it is dark enough, you can see the starts.
