Red Devil matmen give Lions a Scare

By Kent Garfield and Sam Snow
SHS Staff Writers

Springville wrestling is looking strong this year.  This past week Springville had a dual meet against rival Payson. It was a very close dual match. It came down to the final match, but the Red Devils didn’t have enough to pull it out and lost 30-28. The Red Devils have had a very successful year.  The Red Devils wrestled very well taking second to a strong delta team.  Wrestlers Hayden Petersen and Caleb Christen went undefeated.

Springville is a deep team with a strong junior varsity; they’re looking to dominate at J.V. region this week, which will be hosted by Springville High School.  With a strong showing in J.V. region, Springville has a very good chance to win a Region 7 title.  With only a few weeks left in the season, Springville is preparing for strong performances in both region and state; hoping to place high to cap off a great season.

RED DEVIL BASKETBALL TEAM IS
BITEN BY OREM TIGERS

On Friday night the Orem Tigers traveled to Springville to take on the mighty Red Devils.  Orem came into the game boasting an 11-2 record on the season and 2-2 in region play.  Springville, with a 7-5 record, were undefeated in Region 7 play.

After 32 hard-fought minutes, Orem prevailed 69-54, led by Ian Harward who had 18 points.  Harward, a 6-10 senior who has already committed to play at BYU next season, got going early by throwing down a dunk midway through the first quarter.

The Red Devils fought hard though, led by Alex Mortensen and Raul Delgado who had 19 and 12 respectively.  Springville worked well together in the second half, but could not quite close the gap and get the win.

The Red Devils now look to respond well against Payson in their next home game on February 5.   We encourage all Red Devil fans to come support our team!

The SHS Swim teams have been swimming to their fullest potential this season, and are getting pumped up for the Region 7 Championships. The boys have been led by team captains, Channing Miller and Garrett Pope, to several key victories. They took fourth place in the 2008 Greg Fernley Invitational, second in the Judge Memorial Holiday Classic, and first in the Utah County Invitational. Good showings at these key meets along with an undefeated duel meet  record has the SHS boys seeded first in Region 7. The girls have been led by team captains Heather Wolz and Tricia Buzbee. The girls took sixth place in the 2008 Greg Fernley Invitational, fifth in the Judge Memorial Holiday Classic, and fifth in the Utah County Invitational. The girls team is ranked third in Region 7.

In their last home meet of the season, the Mighty Red Devil swimmers defeated Tooele with several team members receiving first place honors. First place girls winners included: Karlie Taylor in the 200 Freestyle, Heather Wolz in the 200 I.M, Annie Williams in the 50 Freestyle and 100 Freestyle, and Tricia Buzbee in the 100 Fly and 500 Freestyle.  When asked how the Mighty Red Devil boys will do at the Region 7 Championships this weekend, Assistant Coach Daniel Simmons stated, "As far as region is concerned, we hope to get several more swimmers qualified for state and set up a good trial run for our state agenda in two weeks. This should be a good indicator for our team of what we still need to polish over the next two weeks and will allow them to be at their best when they compete at BYU for the state title."

The SHS swimming teams would like to invite you to the Region 7 Championships meet on Friday and Saturday the 23rd and 24th of January at the Leigh Pratt Aquatic Center (55 North 200 West Tooele, Utah  84074). The meet starts at 3:00 on Friday afternoon, and at 9:00 on Saturday morning. Admission will be charged daily and are as follows: Family $15; Adult $5; Students (7th‑ 12th grade) $4; Children $3; and Sr. Citizens (65), & under 5 FREE.
