Essentials of Learning - Utah History (Semester Class)

1 - Each student will gain a basic knowledge of the geography of Utah.

a - The states that border Utah.
b - The size of Utah in relation to the other 49 states.
c - Utah's most identifiable landmark. (The Great Salt Lake)
d - The counties of Utah.
e - The three physiographic provinces. (Middle Rocky Mountain, Colorado Plateau, Basin and Range)

2 - Each student will gain a basic knowledge of the first inhabitants of Utah.

3 - Each student will gain an understanding of Spanish conquest in Utah and the early fur trade.

4 - Each student will understand the importance of the White Settlement and the groups that shaped Utah.

5 - Students will gain an understanding of the development of the Mormon migration and its affect on Utah and Utah's Indians.

6 - Students will gain a basic knowledge of the Americanization of Utah.

7 - Students will gain a basic knowledge of the different industries that have shaped the way we live here in Utah.

8 - Each student will understand what progressive reform has taken place in Utah since its settlement.

9 - Students will gain a basic knowledge of the depression and war as it has affected the people of Utah.

10 - Each student will gain an understanding of the relationship between the people of Utah and the land today and tomorrow.

 

Essential Understandings for United States Studies

Semester 1

* Gain a basic knowledge of the Constitution, including the Amendments

* Learn the basic rights and responsibilities of citizenship

* Learn to relate current events with the past

* Understand how the electoral process works

* Understand the evolution of industrialization

* Learn the basic events associated with westward expansion

Semester 2

* Compare and contrast economic systems, focusing on Capitalism

* Know the workings of the US Supreme Court, including important rulings

* Understand the major concepts and ideas associated with the social and cultural
revolutions of the 20th Century

* Learn the states and their capitals

* Compare and contrast major US military conflicts

* Understand and recognize the changing role of women in US History

* Describe the nature of the Cold War
