Essential Understandings – 1st TERM

Computer Technology
Term 1 only

During the 1st term of Computer Technology, student will learn:

  1. Keyboarding technique using Microtype
  2. Basic Computer terminology
  3. Document processing skills and how to format business documents using Word
  4. Internet and Emailing on the world wide web.  

 Entrepreneurship
Term 1 only

During the 1st term of Entrepreneurship, students will:

  1.  Define Entrepreneurship by identifying the qualities and skills of successful entrepreneurs and then comparing these qualities with the strengths and weaknesses in their own lives to see if they truly have the desire to become an entrepreneur.  

  2. Understand the aspects that make up the free-enterprise system (economics, business cycles, etc.)  and the ways that entrepreneurs contribute to the system.
     
  3. Recognize different business ideas and evaluate whether those ideas are opportunities worth pursuing using the opportunity formula and calculating the risks. 

  4. Plan and implement a group project in which they will apply their basic understanding of starting and running a business in a real-world setting.

 

Marketing A
Term 1 only

During the 1st term of Marketing A, students will:

  1. Define the functions and foundations of marketing and describe the importance and benefits of it throughout the world. 

  2. Identify the five marketing utilities and implement a group utility project demonstrating their understanding of the utilities. 

  3. List the different ways that a market is segmented to reach its end goal of identifying a target market. 

  4. Know the elements that make up a marketing plan and create one with a group.  

  5. Understand the key economic factors that effect marketing and business (supply and demand, economic systems, resources, business cycles, etc.)

Computer Technology
Term 2 only

During the 2st term of Computer Technology, students will:

  1. Continue to implement keyboarding technique using Microtype software

  2. Continue defining basic computer terminology

  3. Learn how to create a presentation using PowerPoint software.  The presentation will include:
    1. a variety of slide layouts and designs
    2. animations
    3. transitions
    4. graphics and text
    5.  sounds
  4. Create spreadsheets using Excel software.  Through the completion of the unit, they will be able to:
    1. Manipulate and format data within the spreadsheet to be eye-catching and professional
    2. Calculate formulas and functions
    3. Sort data
    4. Construct and interpret charts using data within spreadsheets

Entrepreneurship
Term 2 only

During the 2nd term of Entrepreneurship, students will:

  1.  Determine types of businesses and pinpoint target markets for those businesses through market segmentation.   Once the target market is defined, students will learn how to determine the wants/needs of the market by conducting research and focus groups.

  2. Understand the importance of a business plan in starting a business.  They will be able to define the components of a business plan and will write a complete business plan.

  3. Utilize the four components of the marketing mix for a business.  They will fully understand the 4 P’s of marketing and their importance of the success/failure in a company.

  4. Understand finances and know how to interpret financial documents them in a business setting including:
    1. Cash flow statements
    2. Income statements
    3. Balance sheets
    4. Sources of capital

 

  1. Plan and implement another group project in which they will apply their understanding of starting and running a business in a real-world setting.

Marketing A
Term 2 only

During the 2nd term of Marketing A, students will:

  1. Define different management structures and management functions and explain the importance of good management within a company
  2. Identify the type of personality traits that they have from taking numerous character assessments.  With those assessments they will be able to interpret their strengths as a leader and different ways to turn their natural weaknesses into strengths. 
  3. Define the steps in the selling process and explain the importance of correct salesmanship in the business world.
  4. Apply their knowledge of the sales process by giving a well-prepared sales presentation to the class.

Marketing B
Term 1 only

During the 1st term of Marketing B, students will:

  1.   Understand the steps and factors involved in setting prices and the importance of price planning for a business.

  2.  Recognize the significance of market research in all aspects of a business.  They will then prepare a market research report consisting of the following: cover letter, secondary and primary research, survey, and statistical findings.

  3.  Explain the nature of distribution within a business and how it relates to all 4 P’s of marketing.

Marketing B
Term 2 only

During the 2nd term of Marketing B, students will:

  1. Define promotion and all facets that lie under the promotional umbrella.

  2. Identify the five elements and list examples of each element of the promotional mix.  They will demonstrate each element of the promotional mix through the creation of a window display.

  3. Understand product planning and how it relates to marketing by planning a product mix demonstrating width and depth of a product line.

  4. Identify the steps to a product’s life cycle and explain what can be done to keep the product on the shelves for as long as possible.
  5. Understand and define the elements that make up a products’ value (packaging, labeling, and branding) and demonstrate how to combine these elements into an end of term project.
