MOUNTAINLAND APPLIED TECHNOLOGY COLLEGE 2008-2009
In partnership with Nebo School District , Mountainland Applied Technology College (MATC) provides high school students advanced technical training for high school credit. (Credits are awarded by the student's school). High school students may enroll in MATC programs tuition-free and learn marketable job skills before graduation. Students are responsible for applicable fees for each program. Fees vary in amount and must be paid by the payment deadline. Students must be at least 16 years old and register through their high school counselor to attend MATC.

Classes are offered at various times and on several campuses. When registering, carefully read the information regarding location, day and times. Medical Assisting--$190
Learn how to assist a doctor or nurse in a clinical setting including: laboratory procedures, injection, CPR, First Aid, EKG, phlebotomy, culturing, urinalysis, reception, scheduling, billing, insurance and medical coding. Nurse Assisting (CNA)--$50
Learn how to provide direct patient care under the direction of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse in hospital, long term care, home health, and other health care settings. Clinical experiences in a variety of health care facilities will be included. Students certify in CPR and First Aid and will prepare for the State Certified Nursing Assistant exam. Many practical/registered nursing programs in the state require a CNA certificate as a prerequisite. Additional costs for Textbook and Workbook, CPR, and Scrubs are approximately $110. Physical Therapy Aide--$75
Prepare to assist a physical therapist. Students will learn anatomy, medical terminology, first aid, CPR, modalities, methods of therapy, therapeutic exercise and tapping techniques. Emphasis is placed on a practical, hands-on approach rather than theoretical. Additionally, students learn how to administer massage, muscle stimulation, ultra sound, paraffin wax, cryo cuffs, hydro collator, rehabilitation exercises and the use of exercise equipment. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)-$65
Prepare for a career in public service, such as law enforcement, fire science, or emergency medical services. This comprehensive program will prepare students for the state certification exam through lectures and extensive hands-on experiences. Due to state certification requirements, students 18th birthday must be no later than March 1st for fall block and no later than August 31st for spring block. High school seniors or older. Wildland Firefighter I, II, & EMT-$65 fee-Single Program, $130 fee-Both Programs
The Wildland Firefighter (WF) courses will cover material for certification as a Wildland Firefighter I and II. These courses will follow the guidelines set forth by the National Wildfire Coordinating Group. They will also follow the Utah Fire Science Certification Standards. With successful completion of both a written and physical test, students will receive a Wildland Firefighter I Red Card. In order to participate in the testing a student must be 18 years old. This course is open to adults and high school seniors turning 18 by June 1. This course will also be taught in conjunction with an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course. Successful completion of both courses would enable students to be very highly employable in a career of fighting fire. However, students would have the option of enrolling in only one of the courses if they so desire. Each course will run on a rotating basis of every-other-day. (Block schedule; A/B day. In later stages of the courses there will be some training which must take place on Saturdays.) There is a very high demand for certified wildland firefighters throughout the entire nation.

Medical Coding-$190
Medical coders translate medical terminology, diseases, and diagnoses into billing statements. Following this class, student will be able to test for the National Coding Certificate. Additional costs for textbooks, manuals, packets, scrubs, blood pressure equipment are approximately $500.

Medical transcription is the process to effectively and efficiently transcribe medical records, including history and physical reports, clinic notes, office notes, discharge summaries, letters, psychiatric evaluations, laboratory reports, x-ray reports and pathology reports. Pharmacy Technician-$190
Learn how t assist the pharmacist in a retail or hospital setting to prepare, store, and dispense medications. Responsibilities include inventory, ordering, labeling, storing, and distributing medicines, working with patient records, billing information, gathering information for the pharmacist, and distribution of printed information to the patient. Business, Information, and Media Design

Information Technology –$190 fee
IT students will be enrolled in and participants in the Microsoft IT Academy, Cisco Networking Academy and other highly technical and skilled programs. The training goes beyond traditional computer-based instruction by integrating practical knowledge and skills in a hands-on environment. In a lab setting that closely corresponds to a real IT environment, students work with the architecture and infrastructure pieces of technology. As a result, students receive botha strong overview of technology concepts and terminology, and an opportunitu to apply that knowledge in an authentic learning environment. You are immersed in rich multimedia courses that include simulations, games, videos, and interactive text to help students master skills.

Students will achieve certificates from MATC and will learn valuable hands-on skills and earn certifications from Microsoft, Cisco, CompTIA, Linux and Novell. These programs will prepare you for careers in Computer Troubleshooting and Repair, Network Technician, Cisco Administration and Microsoft Administration.

Media Design Technology-3D Modeling & Animation-$95 fee
Learn to create virtual worlds in three dimensions using leading 3D modeling and animation software including Daz Bryce, Carrara, and Alias Maya. As part of the course you will design , model, texture, rig, and animate complete characters that tell a compelling story using basic principles of character design and animation. You will create images and animations for many professional applications including corporate reports, scientific visualization of data, digital terrain models of Earth and Mars, medical and physical simulations, crime scene investigations and more. You will also create a demo video of your images and animations on DVD which you can show to prospective employers. Prerequisite: Basic computer skills and knowledge of Adobe Photoshop.

Media Design Technology-Multimedia II: Production-$90 fee
Students focus on developing skills for multimedia production, including building video projects, websites, and interactive titles for actual clients. You will learn advanced image creation with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, video production with Adobe Premiere Pro and Apple Final Cut Pro; audio editing with Adobe Audition and Soundtrack Pro; website design with Macromedia Dreamweaver and Flash, including interactive animations with Action Scripting; and multimedia authoring with Lingo scripting in Macromedia Director. You will complete professional video documentaries, business websites, and interactive games. You will also practice the project planning and teamwork skills needed to achieve a career in media design technology. Prerequisite: Multimedia I or teacher approval.

Business Technology--$135
Business Technology prepares students for an office technician career in today's high tech business environment. Students learn the basics of keyboarding, word processing, spreadsheets and databases to the intricacies of records management, website management, electronic presentations and accounting practices. Students may be able to waive portions of the program by demonstrating competencies attained in another business technology program. Additional costs for textbooks and workbooks are approximately $100-$250.

 Automotive Technology

Commercial Truck Driving-$1844 fee
Three weeks of intensive training will prepare students for a career in the trucking industry. Topics include: basic and advanced driving skills, truck components and operation, cost efficient operation, rules and regulations, handling cargo, paper work, hazardous materials, first aid, personal health and safety and driver professionalism. Students will also log over 60 hours of over-the-road driving and observation. This training prepares drivers for a career with a wide variety of carriers. Students pay a $40 non-refundable application fee. THe fee includes class materials, equiment use, drug screen, DOT physical, driving and written state testing. Ten students per session. Thirty days prior to class start date all students are required to provide a current copy of a Motor Vehicl Report. Prerequisites: Speak, read, and write ENglish well enough to complete the curriculum, understand traffiac signs, and speak with law enforcement authorities and the public. Employment in professional driving may depend on ability to meet employer and/or licensing requirements such as health and drug screening, a satisfactory driving record, driving test, etc, which is the student's responsibility. Diesel Mechanics-$130 fee
Diesel Mechanics may be hired as mechanics working on engines, automatic transmissions, drive trains, electrical systems, suspension and steering, hydraulics, and air systems. They work on heavy equipment, farm equipment and on highway trucks. Diesel mechanics diagnose, repair, weld, and fine-tune the working parts of buses, trucks, construction machinery, and generators. In this program students will become proficient in basic shop skills, PM inspection, brake relines, engine tune-up and rebuilding, component inspection and measuring, drive trains, suspension and steering.

Vehicle Emissions Test Preparation-$80
This non-credit 15 hour course is designed to help an auto technician prepare for the Utah County Emissions certification by gaining a basic knowledge of the automobile's engine mechanical, cooling, fuel, electrical, and emission control systems. Must be 16 years old with a drivers license.

Survey of Aviation-$70
Must be enrolled with UVU concurrent enrollment to take this course. Designed for high school students interested in career opportunities in Aviation Science and general knowledge of aviation and aerospace studies.This program is only for the serious pilot student. It is exremelly intense and should not be taken lightly. Students explore historical events in aviation and aerospace development, aviation and aerospace terminology, how airplanes and spacecraft fly, research and development of future systems, government and industry roles in the growth of aviation, and potential careers in aviation. Includes field trip and several interesting and exciting projects.

Must be enrolled wit UVU concurrent enrollment to take this course. Designed for entry level, high school student pilots. Introduces the airplane to students as they prepare for flight training. Emphasis is placed on airport systems, air traffic control procedures, aviation weather, air navigation, radio communication procedures, and federal aviation regulations. This course prepares students for the FAA Private Pilot written examination. Lab activities will provide an opportunity for students to view practical applications of required pilot proficiency skills.

Service Training

Carpentry/Building Construction–$35 fee
This course is designed to prepare a student to enter the home building profession. Students receive hands-on training in the actual building of a home. The course begins with site layout, blueprint reading, estimation of materials and building codes. It continues with the excavation, footings, and foundations. The third stage of construction is the rough carpentry which includes the laying of the floor joists, walls, trusses, sheeting, roofing, cement finishing and exterior windows and doors. In the next phase the subcontracotrs are brought in and rough electrical, heating and air conditioning, and plumbing are completed. The walls are then insulatted and sheetrock is installed, taped, and finished. In the final stages the finish carpentry begins with the installation of interior doors, moldings, and flooring. The interior is painted and the finish electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning is done. The exterior is completed. The final touches include the installation of the applicances and cabinets. If time permits, some landscaping may be completed on the home. Each house is then marketed and sold. Additional costs for Carpenter Tool Belt, Speed Square, Utility Knife, Hammer and 25 foot Tape Measure are approximately $100.

Welding: Gas Tungsten Arc Welding-$90 fee
This course will introduce the student to the Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) process. The competencies met in this course will help fulfill the GTAW requirements for the American Welding Society's Entry Level Welder Certificate (OQ10). The student will learn how to properly weld ferrous metals with the most commonly used tungsten electodes and filler wires in all postions. General shop and equipment safety will be stressed. Limited thickness qualifications will also be performed.

Culinary Arts I-$75 fee
Chef Prep is a full year, introductory course that provides skills needed for immediate employment in the exciting culinary field, or continuing education in culinary arts or hospitality management. Students will study nutrition, the history of cooking, sanitation and safety, and basic knife skills. They will rotate through all areas of the kitchen including the dish area, pantry, hot station, bakery, line, short order station, and guest service. Basic cooking principles for meats, poultry, seafood, stocks, sauces, soups, vegetables, and starches will be taught. Students will also be introduced to cakes, cookies, pies, breads, etc. They will serve as shift supervisors and perform management duties. Actual work experience is provided through campus cafeteria assignments, catering at banquets and parties, and serving monthly at the Friday Night Fine Dining. Students must test to receive a Food Handler's Permit. Two consecutive semesters of this class offers the opportunity to test out of eight college credits in the UVU Culinary Arts Program, or three credits in the UVU Hospitality Management Program. Additional costs for Chef Uniform, Textbook, Workbook, and Packet are approximately $160.

Culinary Arts II-$75 fee
Culinary Arts II is a full year course that builds on the skills learned in CulinaryARts I Class. Advanced cooking techniquies are studied in the areas of sauces, soups, meats, poultry, vegetables, food presentations and baking. Students also study computer literacy, workplace relations and management skills as they apply to restaurant management. Actual work experience will be given as they work in the campus cafeteria, cater banquets and parties and serve in supervisory positions monthly in Friday Night Fine Dining.

Cosmetology/MATC Program-$2,000
Students learn several different techniques of hair cutting, coloring, chemical hair services, hair extensions, barbaring, nails and basic aesthetics. The program requires a minimum of 2,000 hours and prepares students for the State Board testing and for licensing as a cosmetologist/barber professional.

Nail Technician-$600 fee
Learn the art of Acrylic Nails, Gel Nails, Nail Wraps and more. Students learn several techniques and gain understanding of disorders, diseases and sanitation to prepare them for a career as a licensed Nail Technician. This is a 300 hour course which prepares you to take your State Board testing and obtain licensing.

Other Cosmetology program options:
Several local private cosmetology programs are available for high school students with reductions in the cost of tuition at private schools through sponsorships and scholarships. Enrollment is limited. MATC Notes:
Associate of Applied Technology (AAT) Degrees
MATC now offers Associate of Applied Technology (AAT) degrees under the direction of the Utah College of Applied Technology (UCAT). These degrees include Medical Assisting and Information Technology. The AAT degree programs require approximately 1,800 hours of instruction, including 12-13 credits of general education. Entering one of these programs as a Junior will enable many students to graduate with an AAT degree at or about the same time they graduate from high school.

Apprenticeship Program/Supervised Work Experience–$145
Apprenticeship programs are composed of two parts: (I) on -the-job training and (2) classroom instruction. On-the-job training is provided by a sponsor who exposes the apprentice to practical applications in all phases of a prticular craft. The classroom related instruction is an organized and systematic form of instruction designed to provide the apprentice with knowledge of the theoretical and technical aspects of his or her craft. The College neither provides on-the-job traiining nor acts as program sponsor for apprentices. Individuals must locate their own program sponsors. Nebo Technology Center, 65 S 630 W, Spanish Fork–Classes offered:

Computer Repair & Networking Semester Class Grade 11 & 12
Prepare for and take industry standard exams to be certified tin Comp TIA's A+, and Network+. Learn to build, troubleshoot and maintain workstations, as well as setup, troubleshoot and maintain basic servers in a networked environment.

Beginning Television Production
Enter the exciting world of television production. Students will learn audio and video production skills ranging from basic camera operation to digital video editing. Public Service Announcements and News Features are among the programs that will be produced for broadcast on the NET, Nebo Education Television Channel 16.

Advanced Television Production
Experience the responsibilities and challenges of a camera operator, news anchor, reporter or even manager of a real TV station. Learn about virtual sets using chromakey techniques and a green screen. Operate a video switcher, an audio mixer and direct a three camera shoot. Videotape the events of the Nebo School District and broadcast these and other programs on the NET, Nebo Education Television Channel 16.

Chef Prep/ Pro Start Semester Class Grade 11 & 12 UVU concurrent enrollment available. This class will prepare students to perform quality food preparation as it relates to catering, bakery, restaurant, hospitality, and fast food operations. Classes include sanitation, nutrition, menu planning, use and care of commercial equipment and business management. Students will learn food preparation menu item pricing, presentation and public relations skills. They will test to receive their Food Handler's permit.

Will I like this career? Is it interesting? Work-Based Learning classes give junior and senior students the opportunity to "try out" a career. WBL extends the walls of SHS classroom learning to include the community. Students can pursue their chosen career during the school day as an intern.
